SMART Scholarships (DoD) The Dept of Defense recognizes the need to support the education of America's future scientists and engineers. The SMART Scholarship-for-Service Program is part of a concentrated effort to improve the flow of new, highly skilled technical labor into DoD facilities and agencies and to enhance the technical skills of the workforce already in place. SMART offers scholarships to undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students who have demonstrated ability and special aptitude for excelling in STEM fields. Students are also provided opportunities to continue their research in civil service roles following graduation. Fall 2011 Science To Achieve Results (STAR) Fellowships For Graduate Environmental Study (EPA) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as part of its Science to Achieve Results (STAR) program, is offering Graduate Fellowships for master s and doctoral level students in environmental fields of study. The deadline is November 5, 2010 at 4:00 PM for receipt of paper applications, and November 5, 2010 at 11:59:59 PM ET for submittal of electronic applications to Grants.gov. Subject to availability of funding, the Agency plans to award approximately 105 new fellowships by June 30, 2011. Master's level students may receive support for a maximum of two years. Doctoral students may be supported for a maximum of three years, usable over a period of five years. The fellowship program provides up to $42,000 per year of support per fellowship. Institut Pasteur in Paris
Three year fellowships are open to American postdoctoral scientist wishing to pursue research at the Institut Pasteur in Paris . Deadline is September 17, 2010.
Ten week internships at the Insitut Pasteur are also available to undergrads contemplating a scientific career. Applicants must be U.S. citizens. Living allowance is $400 per week. Application and deadline information for both programs may be found at http://www.pasteurfoundation.org/
Women from developing countries: FUNDING
Since 1981 the Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund (MMMF), a 501(c)(3), not-for-profit, public charity, has awarded scholarships to outstanding women from developing countries, who are completing degrees at US/Canadian universities and are committed to improving the wellbeing of women and children in developing countries. Individual MMMF Scholarships are between $12,000-$15,000 and must be used during the 2011-2012 academic year. The MMMF administers the program with support from volunteers affiliated with the World Bank and the World Bank Family Network (WBFN).

Human Rights Watch Fellowships
Human Rights Watch, the international human rights monitoring and advocacy organization, invites applications for its fellowship program. Human Rights Watch is known for its impartial and reliable human rights reporting on over 70 countries worldwide, its innovative and high-profile advocacy campaigns, and its success in affecting the policy of the US and other influential governments toward human rights abusers.
Fellows work full-time for one year with Human Rights Watch in New York, Washington, D.C., or London. (Aryeh Neier fellows work full-time in New York or Washington, DC, and, for an additional year at the ACLU.) Fellows monitor human rights developments in various countries, conduct on-site investigations, draft reports on human rights conditions, and engage in advocacy aimed at publicizing and curtailing human rights violations. Past fellows have conducted research and advocacy on numerous different issues in countries all over the world.
The salary for 2010-2011 fellows will be $55,000, plus excellent employer-paid benefits. The salary for 2011-2012 is currently under review and may be increased.
